Key West, Florida

Key West has always been my choice for a quick weekend trip. The 5 hour drive down to the southern most point is one of the most beautiful rides you can imagine. With only a two lane road connection the dozens of islands on the path, there’s mostly water and mangrove tree, as far as the eye can see. Once you make it to the end, a party is waiting for you. Duval street is lined with bars and live music every night. Sloppy Joes and Irish Kevin’s are usually a crowd favorite with their energetic bands that like to get the crowd involved. I enjoy watching other people get up on stage to be embarrassed. Sunset at Mallory Square is a must while in Key West. Street performers gather there every night to entertain tourists and make some tips as the sun goes down in the background. Once the sun sets the party turns up a notch back on Duval Street.
Each year we try to take an annual boys trip down to the keys. When we’re not walking down Duval Street, our favorite thing to do is rent mopeds to explore the island. For $30 a day we see the whole island with the salty air in our faces. We find it to be a great way to travel around and stop at our favorite places to eat. One restaurant we make sure to hit every time is Hogfish Cafe for hogfish tacos.
Beside all the food and drinks we consume there, the Keys also offer some of Florida’s best scuba diving and fishing. You can fish right off the bridges or go out on a charter for half the day. Either way you’re almost guaranteed to catch something. I scuba dove for the first time in the keys and if you’re interested in learning, I highly recommend dong it in the keys. The shallow reefs are usually no deeper than 30 feet, in which you can see thousands of fish and coral. Lobster season opens up every year in August and this past year we were lucky enough to catch lobster fest on our trip. Vendors line Duval Street with their BBQ’s piled with fresh caught lobster to celebrate. The keys have so much to offer which is what makes it so easy to come back.
